Pakistan is basically an agro-based economy, but due to heavy use of
pesticides and chemical fertilizers, lot of health and environmental problems
are taking place. The pity is that many formers use industrial waste and
domestic sewerage for agricultural purpose. The worst case is Hudiara Drain
which enters Pakistan near
Hudiara Village in the Lahore District. This drain
bring around 18% of industrial wastewater from India and its concentration
and flow continue to increase due to industrial units established along this
drain.
The extensive use of industrial wastewater from Hudiara Drain not only affect
the ecology but also has a wider impact on the health through food chain.

Vegetables cultivated with polluted water of Hudiara Drain are not only used
consumed by the residents of villages around Hudiara Drain, but are also
sold in the vegetable markets of Lahore city.

The result is drastic situation. The groundwater along this drain has been
extensively polluted already. UDERC has recently produced reports on the
Wastewater Quality of Hudiara Drain. Also a report of groundwater pollution
due to Hudiara Drain is being prepared.

UDERC is considering to introduce eco-friendly fertilizers produced by
recycling kitchen waste.

UDERC is also starting plantation campaign of eco-friendly plants in our
project areas.

UDERC welcomes an sort of collaborations for action oriented research
projects in the rural areas along the Hudiara Drain in Lahore District, Punjab,
Pakistan.
